CULT EDITOR'S TOP EVENTS TO HIT THIS WEEK

ART EXHIBITION: DAVID SHRIGLEY

NOW - MAY 23rd at Anton Kern Gallery, 532 W 20th St, New York, NY 10011

British artist David Shrigley's playful wit and childlike style exude the peaceful serenity of youth. No need to analyze -- things are how they are...

Like a great skeptical underground project, Shrigley's conceptual, idea-based art is a never-ending stream of curious propositions and eccentric moral dilemmas. With acerbic humor and strangely profound insights, the artist lays bare the ambiguities, comedy and pathos of everyday life. According to the artist, most aspects of life have the potential to be "ridiculous, absurd, awkward, funny, and meaningless all at once."

ART EXHIBITION: Andy Warhol: Campbell’s Soup Cans and Other Works, 1953–1967

NOW through OCT 12th at the Museum of Modern Art, 11 W. 53rd Street, New York, NY, 10019

Andy Warhol not only pioneered a movement in the NYC art scene, but also in the NYC social scene. His colorful works highlight his obsession with fame, fun, and pop culture and the MOMA takes us back to where it all started -- with those infamous Campbell's soup cans.

"On July 9, 1962, Andy Warhol made his one-person debut at a Los Angeles gallery called Ferus, founded five years earlier by curator Walter Hopps and artist Edward Keinholz. It represented the first showing of Warhol's Campbell's Soup Can paintings, an image he became indelibly linked with. Often installed in a grid, they were originally hung in a single line at Ferus, an installation MoMA revives here in its look at Warhol's early years, when he turned the art world upside down." -- Time Out NY

FASHION FILIM: IRIS

APR 29 - ongoing at Film Forum, 209 West Houston Street, NY, NY 10014

IRIS pairs legendary 87-year-old documentarian Albert Maysles with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how, even in Iris' dotage, a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. IRIS portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life's sustenance and reminds us that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment. Tickets here.

"I didn't give a damn about going to the party or being at the party, it was getting dressed for the party...and there's truth and poetry in that" -- Iris Apfel
